CT scanning combines special x-ray equipment with sophisticated computers to produce multiple images or pictures of the inside of the body. CT scans of internal organs, bones, soft tissue and blood vessels provide greater clarity and reveal more details than regular x-ray exams.
Using specialized equipment and expertise to create and interpret CT scans of the body, radiologists can more easily diagnose problems such as cancers, cardiovascular disease, infectious disease, appendicitis, trauma and musculoskeletal disorders.
OSF Saint Anthony’s Health Center was the first in the St. Louis Metropolitan area to incorporate one of the most advanced diagnostic tools for helping physicians reach confident diagnoses to provide the best patient care – a 64-slice CT scanner with low dosage radiation. It has the ability to drastically reduce radiation levels by almost 50 percent compared to other 64-slice CT scanners. This is especially important for patients who may need multiple imaging tests, such as individuals with cancer and women of child-bearing age.
