Magnet Certification

On August 14, 2024, the Commission on Magnet voted unanimously to honor OSF HealthCare St. Joseph Medical Center with Magnet recognition for the fourth time. OSF St. Joseph joined the elite list of Magnet-recognized hospitals in 2008; the first in McLean County.

Magnet applicants undergo a rigorous evaluation process, including written documentation, extensive interviews, and an on-site review of nursing services. Magnet designation lasts four years, during which time the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC) monitors the hospital closely to ensure it maintains high standards of care. ANCC is the world's largest and most prestigious nurse credentialing organization, and a subsidiary of the American Nurses Association.

American Association of Cardiovascular and Pulmonary Rehabilitation (AACVPR)

In August 2019, OSF HealthCare St. Joseph Medical Center received a three-year certification by the American Association of Cardiovascular and Pulmonary Rehabilitation (AACVPR), recognizing our commitment to improving quality of life by enhancing standards of care.

AACVPR Program Certification is the only peer-review accreditation process designed to review individual programs for adherence to standards and guidelines developed and published by AACVPR and other professional societies. AACVPR-certified programs are recognized as leaders in the field of cardiovascular and pulmonary rehabilitation because they offer the most advanced practices available.

American College of Radiology Accreditations

OSF HealthCare St. Joseph Medical Center – College Avenue Imaging Services has been awarded a three-year term of reaccreditation in four categories by the American College of Radiology (ACR): mammography, computed tomography, breast ultrasound, and general ultrasound. Stroke Gold Plus Quality Achievement Award / Target: Stroke Honor Roll Elite Plus Award

OSF HealthCare St. Joseph Medical Center received the American Heart Association/American Stroke Association’s Get With The Guidelines® – Stroke Gold Plus Quality Achievement Award in July 2019. The award recognizes the hospital’s commitment and success in ensuring stroke patients receive the most appropriate treatment according to nationally recognized, research-based guidelines based on the latest scientific evidence.

OSF St. Joseph also received the association's Target: Stroke^SM Honor Roll Elite Plus Award in July 2019 for meeting quality measures reducing the time between the patient's arrival at the hospital and treatment with the clot-buster tissue plasminogen activator, or tPA, the only drug approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration to treat ischemic stroke.

Becker's Hospital Review

OSF HealthCare St. Joseph Medical Center was honored to be named among Becker's Hospital Review’s 2017 list of "100 Hospitals and Health Systems with Great Heart Programs."

The hospitals included on the annual list are national leaders in multiple aspects of cardiovascular care. They have received recognition for clinical excellence for certain procedures, such as heart bypass and valve surgeries, and treatment of heart failure and heart attack patients. These hospitals also support heart education and disease prevention efforts.

At OSF St. Joseph, 90 percent of coronary artery bypass surgery cases are done as beating heart surgery, so patients avoid the heart lung machine. Heart care specialists also take a team approach between the cardiovascular surgeons, hospitalists and staff to treat each patient.

Blue Distinction Center for Cardiac Care

In February 2019, Blue Cross Blue Shield of Illinois has selected OSF HealthCare St. Joseph Medical Center as a Blue Distinction Center facility in cardiac care. Blue Distinction Centers are nationally designated health care facilities shown to deliver improved patient safety and better health outcomes, based on measures developed with input from the medical community. America’s 50 Best Hospitals for Vascular Surgery Award

OSF HealthCare St. Joseph Medical Center was named one of America’s 50 Best Hospitals for vascular surgery outcomes in 2016 and 2017.

The award recognizes hospitals for superior outcomes in abdominal aortic aneurysm repair, carotid surgery, and peripheral vascular bypass surgery. Patients who have these procedures at these nationally recognized hospitals have a lower risk of experiencing a complication during their hospital stay.

America’s 100 Best Hospitals for Spine Surgery Award

HIMSS Analytics Electronic Medical Record Stage 6 Designation

OSF HealthCare St. Joseph Medical Center has achieved Stage 6 designation of the HIMSS Analytics Electronic Medical Record (EMR) Adoption Model. The Stage 6 designation means OSF St. Joseph has fully implemented physician documentation/charting in patient care service areas. The medical center has also implemented a full complement of PACS systems, which provide medical images to physicians via an intranet and displaces all film-based images. Hospital Compare - Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS)

OSF HealthCare St. Joseph Medical Center earned a Four-Star Rating for quality and safety from the U.S. Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS), December of 2018.

Illinois Department of Public Health

IDPH Primary Stroke Center

The Illinois Department of Public Health (IDPH) named OSF HealthCare St. Joseph Medical Center a Primary Stroke Center in April 2014 following the creation of stroke care systems in Illinois. OSF St. Joseph was the first hospital in McLean County to achieve this designation.

Illinois Healthy Worksite

In November of 2014, OSF St. Joseph was designated a Gold level recipient in the inaugural Illinois Healthy Worksite Designation program. Only 12 organizations in Illinois, and four in McLean County, have received this level of recognition. The designation is a three-year award.

Illinois Perinatal Quality Collaborative (ILPQC)

The Illinois Perinatal Quality Collaborative (ILPQC) recognized OSF HealthCare St. Joseph Medical Center for our effort in decreasing early elective deliveries. This high recognition is earned by hospitals that promote medically safe, full-term pregnancies with mature deliveries after 39 weeks. To be part of the Early Elective Delivery initiative, hospitals need to have less than five percent early elective delivery rate. OSF St. Joseph has had a zero percent EED rate for more than two years.

The Joint Commission

Joint Commission accreditation is recognized nationwide as a symbol of quality that reflects an organization's commitment to meeting certain performance standards. To earn and maintain accreditation, an organization must undergo an on-site survey by a Joint Commission survey team at least every three years. Gold Seal of Approval

OSF St. Joseph has earned the Commission's Gold Seal of Approval every three years since 2005.

OSF St. Joseph earned the Gold Seal of Approval for Pathology & Clinical Laboratory from The Joint Commission in September 2019.

Advanced Certification for Primary Stroke Centers

Since 2007, OSF HealthCare St. Joseph Medical Center has earned the Gold Seal of Approval from the Joint Commission for Primary Stroke Centers every three years. This means OSF St. Joseph is now a certified stroke center, a rare distinction for hospitals providing neuroscience care.

In the Spring 2020 score update, OSF HealthCare St. Joseph Medical Center was awarded a “B” Hospital Safety Grade. Scores range from A, B, C, D, and F, and are released every six months.

Truven Health Analytics

OSF HealthCare St. Joseph Medical Center was named one of the nation’s 50 Top Cardiovascular Hospitals by Truven Health Analytics in February 2016. The study, now in its 17th year, singled out 50 hospitals that achieved superior clinical outcomes in this critical area of hospital care.

This year marks the 25th anniversary of the OSF St. Joseph Heart Surgery Program. Nearly 90 percent of coronary artery bypass surgery cases are done as beating heart surgery – allowing the patient to avoid the heart lung machine.
