Counseling

Whether you are a patient, survivor or caregiver, the mental and emotional burden of cancer can feel heavy. At OSF HealthCare Cancer Institute and our network of cancer centers, we believe human connection is strong medicine.

We offer licensed counselors and social workers who specialize in cancer and are here to help you navigate every emotion. In addition, we offer networking opportunities, educational events and time to share with others who may be walking through a similar experience.

Benefits of Counseling During Cancer Treatment

Seeking mental and emotional support during your cancer journey can be just as important as seeking physical care.

It can help you:

  • Develop and share coping strategies
  • Adjust to lifestyle changes that may come with a cancer diagnosis
  • Reduce feelings of isolation
  • Gain a sense of community and belonging through networking opportunities
  • Get connected to resources and education, including classes and webinars
  • Form lasting friendships with peers walking through a similar experience

What to Expect

Our licensed counselors and social workers can meet with patients and family members both in-person and virtually, either one-on-one or in group settings.

  • We partner with our communities to facilitate and host networking opportunities for those affected by cancer, including groups dedicated to specific cancers or experiences of the cancer journey.
  • When you meet with a counselor or attend a group event, you can:
  • Share any part of your experience, or anything at all
  • Discuss fears and celebrate victories
  • Work through the feelings and challenges you experience with other people who have gone through similar experiences
  • Learn about topics of interest to you

Cost

We do bill insurance for individual counseling sessions. You can check with your insurance provider for more specific information on your expected copays or out-of-pocket costs.

How to Get Started

Your cancer care team can refer you to a licensed counselor or social worker or help you find cancer networking events that are local to you and that will be a good fit for your needs. Check out our calendar of upcoming events or find us on Facebook.
