Micra Pacemaker

Experience the health benefits of a pacemaker without a chest scar or bump. A Micra pacemaker treats bradycardia (slow heartbeat) with a pill-sized device that’s out of sight and out of mind. Compared to traditional pacemakers, it carries a lower risk of side effects. That means you can live a more active life and feel more confident about your heart’s health.

Where can I get a micra pacemaker?

Electrophysiologists (heart rhythm specialists) implant pacemakers. Your cardiologist or primary care doctor can refer you to an OSF HealthCare Cardiovascular Institute electrophysiologist in:

  • Bloomington, Illinois
  • Escanaba, Michigan
  • Galesburg, Illinois
  • Ottawa, Illinois
  • Peoria, Illinois
  • Rockford, Illinois
  • Urbana, Illinois

What is bradycardia?

Sinus bradycardia is a type of arrhythmia (irregular heartbeat). It means your heart rhythm is too slow — less than 60 beats per minute. Your heart may not be able to pump enough blood when you’re active, causing you to feel dizzy, tired, faint or short of breath. In serious cases, bradycardia can lead to heart failure.

Do I need a pacemaker?

Your doctor may recommend a cardiac pacemaker for bradycardia if medications aren’t a good option for you. This small device speeds up your heartbeat to a normal rhythm. An electrophysiologist places the technology in your chest, where it sends electrical signals to your heart as needed.

Traditional Pacemakers

Conventional pacemaker surgery involves an incision in your chest. The devices include a tiny generator with leads (wires) that connect to your heart. If the leads break or develop an infection, a doctor must replace them.

Micra Pacemaker Benefits

Micra (Medtronic) pacemakers have a lower risk of complications (problems) because they:

  • Don’t require a chest incision
  • Don’t use leads
  • Are 93% smaller than conventional pacemakers

Pacemaker Implantation

To place a Micra leadless pacemaker in your heart, an electrophysiologist:

  1. Inserts a soft tube called a catheter into a blood vessel in your upper thigh
  2. Uses the catheter to carry the Micra device up to your heart
  3. Places the pacemaker against the heart wall, where it stays

Recovery and Follow-Up Care

You’ll recover much faster after Micra pacemaker implantation than you would after heart surgery. Ask us when you can safely return to your activities. Your care team will remotely monitor your pacemaker and schedule routine appointments to make sure it works well for years to come.
