CHOI Electrophysiology

Pediatric Electrophysiology

The pediatric electrophysiology program at OSF HealthCare Children’s Hospital of Illinois provides a range of tests and treatments for any heart rhythm issues, including those linked to congenital heart disease. From heart rhythm issues and congenital heart disease to complex cases with devices and ablations, we've got you covered. You can trust us to provide compassionate care and expert support when you need it most.

What is Electrophysiology?

Electrophysiology is the study of the heart's electrical system, which controls how the heart beats. Pediatric electrophysiologists find and treat problems that cause irregular heartbeats (arrhythmias). This helps children have a healthy, steady heartbeat.

Conditions We Treat

We treat a wide range of heart conditions, from common to complex.

Noninvasive Electrophysiology Services

We offer a wide range of advanced heart monitoring and follow-up services to ensure the best care for your child.

  • Device clinics: Pacemaker, ICD and ILR evaluations and follow-ups
  • Electrocardiograms (ECG): Standard 12- and 15-lead ECGs to assess heart rhythm
  • Event monitors: Wireless devices to capture intermittent arrhythmias
  • Exercise stress testing: Treadmill and stationary bicycle testing for heart function assessment
  • Holter monitoring: Wireless, ambulatory monitoring for continuous rhythm tracking
  • Hypoallergenic options: Monitoring for patients with sensitive skin
  • Remote monitoring: Ongoing pacemaker, ICD and ILR monitoring from home

Invasive Electrophysiology Services

Diagnostic Electrophysiologic Studies

Electrophysiologic studies are minimally invasive tests that allow us to assess the heart’s electrical activity in detail. These studies help us pinpoint arrhythmia causes and guide treatment decisions to improve outcomes for each patient.

Innovative Ablation Program

Through our advanced catheter ablation program, we offer a range of innovative solutions and continue to research and stay up to date on the latest developments in catheter ablation. Your child will receive the most effective, cutting-edge treatments tailored to their needs.

  • Advanced ablation catheters: Featuring irrigation and contact force technology
  • CARTO®3 system: 3D mapping with UNIVU®MODULE for precision
  • Cryoablation: Non-heat-based ablation for targeted treatment
  • Intracardiac echocardiography: Detailed imaging within the heart
  • Multipolar catheters: High-resolution diagnostics for detailed rhythm assessment

Why Choose Us

Whether you're looking for a consultation or a second opinion, we’re here to meet your child’s unique needs.

Our commitment to you includes:

  • Offering advanced care for adults with congenital heart disease (ACHD)
  • Participating in national quality programs through the American College of Cardiology’s ICD and IMPACT registries
  • Providing second opinions for complex repeat EP ablations
  • Using innovative techniques for placing and managing heart devices

Interventional Cardiology vs. Electrophysiology

Both interventional cardiology and electrophysiology help keep hearts healthy, but they do so in different ways.

Interventional cardiology deals with blood flow problems in the heart. This includes procedures like placing stents to open blocked arteries and improve blood flow.

Electrophysiology focuses on the heart’s electrical system, which controls your heartbeat. Electrophysiologists diagnose and treat heart rhythm issues, such as arrhythmias, to help keep your heart beating steadily.
