Curriculum Expectations

Hours

Resident hours will be generally 8:00 A.M. to 5:00 P.M., with the exception that on surgery days, residents may need to report earlier. Residents are expected to remain at their assigned locations. Residents responsible for operating room patients are to be available until the patient goes home or is otherwise removed from the operating room, which may be as late as 5:00 P.M. Residents are to attend Monthly Patient Care Conferences, Quarterly Resident Progress Conferences., the occasional Dental Society Meeting or Health Fair which may be scheduled after working hours to allow faculty members to attend.

Call

All residents on a rotating basis throughout the year share on-call duty for the OSF Saint Francis Medical Center. A GPR resident does not need to be physically in-house during their call duty, but must be within 15 minutes of arrival.

Rounds

Residents will participate in rounds at OSF Saint Francis Medical Center with the Faculty. These rounds serve for inpatient follow-up and exchange of information about admitted and referred emergency patients along with case presentations.

Operating Room Experience

Residents receive experience in providing general and pediatric dentistry with general anesthesia in an operating room setting. The patients are those who are not manageable in the dental clinic due to mental retardation, cerebral palsy, brain injury, medical problems or immaturity.

The residents learn to evaluate patients for general anesthesia and admit patients for outpatient surgeries and procedures. X-rays, diagnosis, treatment planning, and dental treatment are conducted while the patient is under general anesthesia. The residents are also responsible for post-operative care and coordination discharge of the patients with the attending dentist and physician. Additionally, residents will learn venipuncture and intubation of patients.
