EMR's comprise the largest percentage of our areas first responder force. EMR's are everywhere. They can be your grocer, your accountant, your barber or even that farmer you pass, waving on a back country road. EMRs are equipped with a guided set of skills to preserve life in moments of need and to respond quickly to emergencies until more advanced care arrives. EMR's are an essential part of any EMS system.
The EMR program offered by ECIEMS follows the US Department of Transportation 2009 National EMS Education Standards as mandated by the Illinois Department of Public Health. The courses consist of a minimum of 54 hours synchronous and asynchronous material which includes basic airway management, patient assessment, medical and trauma emergencies, some BLS medications and procedures, special populations and EMS operations. Extra class time may be allotted by the individual instructor to allow for skills practice and testing. Upon successful completion of the EMR program, the students are eligible to receive licensure in the State of Illinois as an EMR.
Anyone interested in obtaining the necessary skill and knowledge to perform prehospital care at the EMR level. Providers with this skill may align with these agencies after obtaining licensure: volunteer fire and/or EMS agencies, industry medical response teams. Anyone interested in advancing through the healthcare professions, this is a great first step. Our students have become great EMRs, EMTs, Paramedics, nurses, advanced practice nurses and even a doctor!
