When to See a Health Professional

Seek medical attention if any of these situations apply to you:

  • Joint pain stops you from using your arm or leg.
  • Your pain lasts more than a few days or starts to get worse.
  • Your joint is swollen, red or warm.
  • You develop a fever or chills, which could indicate an infection.
  • You have pain at the site of a previous injury

Who to Ask for a Diagnosis

Your primary care provider’s office may be a good place to start. This provider can make informed recommendations based on your health history and refer you to an orthopedic doctor, if necessary.

If you need treatment before your primary care provider is available, visit the nearest OSF HealthCare urgent care clinic or emergency department in central or northern Illinois.

Why Does My Joint Hurt?

Causes of joint pain include:

  • Osteoarthritis – This common type of arthritis happens when the soft cartilage that cushions the ends of bones wears down, allowing bones to rub painfully against each other.
  • Rheumatoid arthritis or psoriatic arthritis – If you have either of these autoimmune diseases, your immune system attacks tissue in your joints, causing painful swelling.
  • Injuries – Sprains, strains, fractures and other injuries harm a joint’s bones or soft tissues.
  • Overuse – Repetitive motions you make for work or sports can strain the muscles and ligaments surrounding a joint.
  • Chronic medical conditions – Lupus, fibromyalgia, obesity and other long-term illnesses may also lead to pain in your knees, hips, wrists and other joints.

OSF HealthCare will not only treat your joint pain, but also provide care for any related conditions. That helps you prevent future joint problems.
