Joint Replacement

Life doesn’t stop when you have arthritis. Stay on the move with joint replacement surgery from OSF HealthCare. An orthopedic surgeon will exchange your worn-out knee, hip or other joint with a long-lasting implant that feels natural. You can enjoy a more active life for years to come.

Is Surgery Right for Me?

Ask your doctor about joint replacement (arthroplasty) if arthritis pain:

  • Doesn’t go away after nonsurgical treatments, like physical therapy, cortisone injections or knee gel injections (viscosupplementation)
  • Keeps you up at night
  • Stops you from doing daily activities

You’ll need to be in good health for surgery. If you have chronic conditions, your doctor will help you get them under control.

Joint Replacement Throughout Illinois

You can receive joint replacement surgery in:

High-Quality Care

OSF Saint Anthony Medical Center’s hip replacement and knee replacement program earned The Joint Commission’s Gold Seal of Approval. That means you can trust us for safe, high-quality care.

Full Range of Procedures

Choose OSF HealthCare for:

  • Total knee, hip or shoulder replacement – Exchanges your entire joint for an implant
  • Anterior hip replacement – Makes a smaller incision than traditional hip replacement surgery and allows you to start walking again the day of surgery
  • Partial hip, shoulder or knee replacement (resurfacing) – Treats only arthritic or damaged areas, leaving some of your natural joint intact
  • Reverse total shoulder replacement – Switches the placement of the ball and socket so you can lift your arms higher after a severe rotator cuff tear
  • Revision surgery – Replaces all or part of your implant if it loosened, wore out or led to an infection

Convenient, Outpatient Joint Replacement

Your care team will help you get up and moving again within a few hours of surgery. You may even be able to leave the hospital the same day. Outpatient surgery saves you time and money and lets you recover at home, where you feel most comfortable.

Class Prepares You for Surgery

Before surgery, invite a loved one to join you at a free OSF HealthCare seminar that explains:

  • How to get ready for joint replacement
  • What to expect on the day of surgery
  • Ways to manage postoperative pain
  • How to ensure a safe recovery
  • What your loved one can do to support you

You’ll also meet members of the joint replacement team. They include orthopedic surgeons and a nurse navigator who will guide you through each step of your journey.

Mako Robot Can Improve Your Outcome

In Bloomington or Ottawa, your surgeon may take advantage of the Mako robot. This technology uses an imaging scan to create a 3D virtual model of your joint so the surgeon can tailor treatment to your anatomy. During surgery, your surgeon guides Mako’s robotic arm, which moves more precisely and accurately than human hands. That means the procedure affects less tissue and spares healthy bone. You feel less pain afterward and recover sooner.

Recovery & Rehabilitation

You’ll start physical therapy or occupational therapy while you’re still in the hospital. After you go home, you’ll begin outpatient rehabilitation to regain mobility and everyday skills as you heal.

Ask your care team how to make recovery easier with:

Transitional Care

If you need more support after surgery than you can receive at home, you may benefit from transitional care. Also called swing-bed care, it offers a step between the hospital and home in:

Follow-Up Care

An OSF HealthCare representative will call you in the days after surgery to check your health and answer your questions. During follow-up appointments, your surgeon’s office will make sure you’re healing well. Your care team will tell you how to extend the life of your implant by avoiding high-impact activities and maintaining a healthy weight. Reach out to your surgeon’s office any time you have questions. We’re happy to help.

Understand the Risks of Surgery

Like any surgical procedure, joint replacement carries some health risks, such as bleeding and infection. Talk to your surgeon about the:

  • Potential benefits and risks
  • Risk level based on your health, age and other factors
  • Ways your care team works to keep you safe
  • What you can do to improve your outcome
